Beartown: A Novel. Kindle Edition.

By Fredrik Backman (Author)

Hello, my name is Maria and today we’re talking about Beartown by Fredrik Backman.

This book is about the small isolated hockey town of Beartown.

Unlike other works by Backman this book actually focuses on a variety of characters within the community, so you’re switching between various storylines.

I don’t want to spoil anything for you so I’m just going to talk about the main takeaway that stuck with me.

The main message that stood out to me is that community is important but also dangerous.

This is a very tight-knit community that’s brought together by their passion for hockey and its importance in the general economy and life of the village.

When things are going well for the hockey team, everything is going well for the community.

Obviously it’s difficult for me to go into details because I don’t want to spoil the book for you, but essentially there is a tragic event that occurs in the community which relates to the hockey team and players on the hockey team and eventually there’s this dilemma of how do we combat this.

Do we bring this to the forefront or do we ignore it and allow the hockey team to succeed and hopefully benefit the community.

Now, let’s go over some of the positives and who I think should be reading this book.

One thing I love about this book is that the storyline is so engaging and unpredictable.

I also like that there are so many different characters that you get to connect with and their storylines are told piece by piece and you’re always wanting to know more about the characters and over time you see how they all interrelate and how the community is so small and how they’re all connected.

Although I haven’t explained the exact controversial issue that occurs in this book, the fact that this issue is brought to light I think is very important and a positive because it makes people realize the realities that people face and so I appreciate and like how this controversial topic is brought to light and discussed in a narrative that is realistic.

Who should read this book?

Well, if you like hockey you probably would like this book because the story is based around events related to hockey.

But more importantly young men and women should read this book because the controversial issue that unfolds really is important in today’s world.

Seeing this issue discussed through a fictional story will highlight the impact that these events can have on a community.

That’s it, that’s my book review of Beartown by Fredrik Backman.
